Schildpadden weer "naar huis"
Aquariumpersoneel redt twee zieke schildpadden
Behandeling duurde bijna 5 jaar !!
At the beach in front of the Cretaquarium in Gournes, local residents and school children were on hand as two loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) were released back to their natural environment after receiving treatment from the scientific personnel of the aquarium.
“As we know, the Caretta caretta is a protected species,” Mihalis Papadakis, Director of the Cretaquarium, said in a statement to The Khronicles. “The story of these two turtles should remind us once more of the need for respecting marine life. Simultaneously, it prompts us towards actions to acquaint and sensitise the public on issues of protection of the marine environment. The scientists at the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research and at the Cretaquarium work daily so that this objective can succeed.”
One of the turtles heading home was found at the Karteros beach near the Iraklion airport almost five years ago, in an extremely weak condition with a fishing line in its mouth.

Dr. Aspasia Sterioti from the aquarium, in collaboration with ARCHELON and the marine biologist Dr. Keti Siakavara, provided emergency first aid, followed by a visit to veterinarian Dr. P. Nikiforaki. An x-ray showed the presence of a fish hook in the oesophagus requiring a delicate operation, which was performed by Dr. Nikiforaki, along with another vet, Dr. M. Cacciapioti.
The other turtle returning to the Mediterranean was brought to the Cretaquarium in June, 2010, by Stefano Boni from Aghios Nikolaos, who found it wounded and helpless with its front right leg almost severed by a fishing line. The first aid administered by aquarium staffers was credited with saving the turtle’s leg from being amputated, and after convalescing for five months, it was able to head home again.
